A customer of mine has a Columbian rotating (machinist?) vise, very large, 6" jaw I think with about a 7 or 8" opening and marked with graduations on the rotating part. Also has a pipe jaw and a pretty good sized anvil surface. I searched online and cannot find it and I forgot to get a picture.

OK I found one. Apparently they were sold by Lowes at one time. A guy over at Garage Journal bought one in 2006 for $53 and swears it was very well made. Of course another guy a few posts in has a different opinion. The vise in question is stamped Wilton but I believe Wilton and Columbian are the same company?

Chinese Columbian bad. It is a cast piece of junk, it will shatter with abuse. Wilton and Columbian were not the same. Search craigslist and you will find a good old American made one.

The best vices are forged. These thin cast vices they sell now have a very short life span. They just look like a vise. Save your pennies so when the right deal comes along your ready to pounce. For fun (or tears) go over to MSC and price a Wilton 800S machinists vice... $5000.00 US dollars. Good vices cost big bucks these days...

OK thanks for the advice, which I was going to heed till he texted me today and said "the vise is laying in the carport just come by and take it". So I got it for FREE! Obviously I am not a vise expert (although I have about 6 or 7 now) but I'll post back when I have time to bolt it down somewhere and test it out.

Looks good and free makes it extra sweet. My Dad bought one that is similar when I was in high school. It survived 5 boys beating on it. He still has it.
