Nothing happens automatically. You would need to ask for change of status but yes, it can be done.

Your status does not automatically change to J-2 after you are married - you will need to file an application with the USCIS to change your status. As a J-2, you are also able to apply for an employment authorization document that will allow you to work. You do not need to return to France - a change of status can be filed here in the U.S.

Bonjour, Upon marriage you can apply for a change of your status from J-1 to J-2 with USCIS. Will take them 4 months to process. As the spouse of a J-1 scholar (hopefully that's what it is) you will have the right to apply for a work permit from USCIS and be employed if you wish.
