If you start spending more time outside the US than in the US (say, you spend more than 6 months within the past 12 months), then they would start questioning your 'intent', and you would have to prove that you never intended to abandon your residency. If you're outside the US for over a year without a re-entry permit, then you're basically screwed (unless you have a good enough reason to apply and be granted the SB-1 visa).
