How do I choose the right vise?
Also, take into account that the vise will have wooden jaw liners (described later) that stick out past the edge of the vise. Most people prefer to have the ends of the jaw liners flush with a corner of the bench top, so take that into consideration when you locate your vise.
How do I fix this broken vise on my bench top?
Temporarily clamp the vise with the spacer blocks to the bench top. With a pencil, mark around the rear jaw onto the edge of the bench. Remove the vise. Make the top line about a 1/16" to 1/8" higher so there'll be a gap between the top of the jaw and the mortise.
What size vise do I need for my liner?
Medium sized vises (9” wide) can handle liners 14-16” in length. You can go up to 18” long for large vises (10” wide). Anything longer will cause excessive racking and shorten the life of your vise.

How does a quick release bench vise work?
A quick-release vice has a unique mechanism which includes a split nut. The nut holds the threaded screw and is located within the main body of the vice. The split nut, by means of a lever or handle, can be removed, thus unlocking the main screw and allowing the moveable jaw to be quickly readjusted.

What is a tail vise?
A tail vise's main purpose is to hold a board flat on the bench for planing, routing, sanding and so on. The tail vise pushes a board tightly against a bench dog so the board can't swivel or move. The bench dog fits in a series of holes cut in the top to accommodate different sizes of boards.

Bench vises hold better when you push toward them, with the mass of the bench behind the workpiece. That's why face vises usually are placed on the left end of the bench.
What kind of wood do you use in a wood vise?
You can use plywood, a good grade, or solid wood, even pine, if that's what you have, to line the jaws of your vise. In this case I've chosen sapele, an african hardwood with perfect hardness and compression for this work. I've used it before and it's one of the best.

The leg vise can be visualized as a giant wooden hand screw clamp placed vertically . This form of vise probably evolved from the blacksmith's iron post vise. Leg vises typically use the left front leg of the bench as the rear jaw of the vise.
What is machine vice?
A machine vise — a mechanical device designed to hold workpieces still during machining operations — can function as manual components or as a machining device. Many typical manufacturing facilities use machining vises for applications that have tight tolerances and require high precision.
Lever Operated Quick Release For Vises
Some quick releases are engaged via a trigger or lever. When you pull on the lever, a loaded spring is connected to a bar that releases the nut and allows you to quickly move the vise jaws.
Handle Operated Quick Releases for Vises
Another mechanism for engaging the split nut is via a handle. Turn the handle one way to engage the nut, and turn it the other way to disengage. Other models may have you lifting the handle up to disengage the nut.
Step 1: 3D Printed Parts
The .STL files for the three parts are attached. If you do not have access to a 3D printer but want to build this project you could use one of the many printing companies who will print one-offs for a reasonable price. You can upload the STL files to them and receive a completed print back in a few days.
Step 3: Fettling the 3D Printed Parts
Once assembled the slide should move freely along the base of the vice; the exact dimensions give a 0.2mm clearance between the sliding parts. However, depending on how well your printer is set up you may well find that the slide . . . won't. Fear not, but do not force the parts otherwise they may jam immovably.
Step 4: Assembly
1) Cut a strip of neoprene rubber approx 12mm (1/2") wide. I found it's tidier to cut the split piece to size before attaching, rather than sticking it on then trying to cut out the middle section. Remove the backing and attach to the jaws of the vice.
Step 5: Final Thoughts
Although the vice works perfectly well, it would be nice to not have the cord slot in the middle of the jaws. To that end I'm working on a redesign of the cord grip which will retain the simplicity and effectiveness of the vice but not have the split jaws.
Step 1: The Design
The design was pretty much done on the band saw, I cut a piece of 18mm plywood out to fit around the narrowed part of the lead screw boss, radiusing both sides to fit snugly around the shaft.
Step 2: Clamp
The clamp is simple enough, a piece of the metal strapping that is used to strap an item to a pallet, bent in a semicircle to fit the handle shaft and a flat with a hole drilled in it to join it to the wooden block.
Step 3: All Fitted and Tested
This device works in two ways, if left to its own devices when the handle is turned to do up the vice the cam turns under and holds the quick release handle out far enough to engage the nut on the lead screw and the vise closes and clamps.
How long should a vise be?
You can go up to 18” long for large vises (10” wide). Anything longer will cause excessive racking and shorten the life of your vise. In the end, the jaw liners need to be at least 1/8" above the vise's guide posts to allow for seasonal movement and flush with the top of the bench.
How thick should a vise liner be?
Any hardwood will work as a liner material. The front jaw liner should be at least 1-5/8" thick to prevent deflection and so you can drill holes in the top of the liner for bench dogs if you like.
Can a vise interfere with a bench?
For general purpose work, the bench's front edge is probably the best option. Just be sure the vise doesn't interfere with the bench's legs or aprons. Also, take into account that the vise will have wooden jaw liners (described later) that stick out past the edge of the vise.
