How can I Make my vise leg smaller?

How do I install the vise?
Make sure the Vise is perfectly vertical when you drill the hole. Attach the leading screw and the screw base in place. Make sure that the supporting leg is kept horizontal at all times, and that it can slide easily.

For this leg vise, I decided to go with a Yost 18" Vise Screw. It's plenty strong, relatively cheap, and turns easily. I mounted the vise-screw's collar to the rear of the leg using four 3" #14 screws. What size bearing do I use for a 30mm shaft?
Great job. I use 30mm shafts and I use a LM30UU bearing. It is a cylinder with a 45mm (1.77") outer diameter. I drill a 1.75" hole in the leg and use a mallet to press in the bearing. (It is a 22 thou compression.) These bearing are then than $10 on Ebay.
How to recess a linear bearing?
To recess the linear bearing, I started by drilling a larger, shallow hole in the leg a few inches up from the bottom on the front face of the leg. At the center of that hole, I drilled another one that was just slightly larger than the bearing's cylinder so that there would be a small amount of wiggle room to make mounting it perpendicular to the leg face a bit easier.

To finish up the chop I added a little wood glue to the hole for the rod -- mostly just to harden the wood around it as the fit was already tight enough to hold it in place.

The solution was to simply use a piece of wood as a guide to help keep the rod perpendicular to the leg face. To do this, I removed the shelf and since I'd already glued the inner stretcher in place, I drilled a couple of holes through it and then attached the guide with screws to the outer stretcher.

With both of these changes, it's now possible to apply a large amount of clamping pressure to a work-piece without fear of damaging the linear bearing. So far I've been really happy with the way it turned out and how well it works. Next up will be a sliding dead-man which should make it even more useful!
What to use to keep leg vise from racking?
I also cut a wedge out of some pine on the bandsaw. This will be used on the floor to help keep the leg vise from racking when you clamp something at the top. I’ll explain more at the end of the post about how it functions.
How to use a wedge vise?
To use it, simple grab the piece you’re wanting to hold in the vise. Close the vise until it makes a little bit of contact at the top. Then, use your foot to kick in the wedge until it engages with the vise at the bottom. Then, turn the handle of the vise about another 1/8 turn and it will be very solid. I can’t believe that’s all it takes to hold it so well, you can’t even get the piece to move when pounding on it!
How to secure leather?
The stuff is stinky, but it works. Simply apply a generous amount to both surfaces, wait about 15 min and then stick them together. Each surface that has contact cement on it will adhere. I clamped this and let it sit for a while, just to make sure it was secured well.
Can you use a leg vise with one finger?
This leg vise has a very easy operation and utilizes a wedge on the floor and I mentioned earlier. As you can see from these photos, it can easily be used with one or two fingers, and that part impressed me.

The only problem I see Tim is that I haven't paid over $20 for a post vise. Probably cost more to make one than one can be purchased for. If you are interested in one, I can stop by a shop I pass every day, and see if they want to sell the one sitting out in front of the shop.

Ive seen a few smiths that have pretty little metal resources make one pretty similar to this out of wood and then reinforce the jaws and back with some metal strapping

These pictures are of a post-type vice I made from scrap metal. Acme threaded rod and nuts can be purchased from the ENCO sale catalog quite reasonable even up to a 1.5" diameter. Spherical washers I purchased from REID supply company.

Start checking yard sales for used bar-bell bars. My son has a second-hand bar that is Acme threaded with big spinner nuts on each end. I think it is 1".
