Bonjour, Upon marriage you can apply for a change of your status from J-1 to J-2 with USCIS. Will take them 4 months to process. As the spouse of a J-1 scholar (hopefully that's what it is) you will have the right to apply for a work permit from USCIS and be employed if you wish.

My colleague is correct, it depends greatly on the exact type of work and organization you would be volunteering with. The short answer is that it still may be considered employment even if unpaid. If you are on a J-2, have the primary visa holder speak with the program coordinator. Perhaps they work with an attorney who can look into it for you.

Yes, you should get an EAD ... even if it is unpaid ... it can still be a forbidden type of 'volunteer WORK'. NOTE: If this volunteer activity is part of a non-profit organization's "normal" volunteer program, it might be OK.
